WordPress without the plugin sprawl

WordPress powers an enormous share of the web and has a deserved reputation for being slow and insecure. Almost always that reputation comes from how a specific site was built, not from WordPress itself.

What we do

  • custom themes built for the content, not bought and bent
  • careful plugin selection and reduction
  • performance work: caching, images, database
  • security hardening and update routines
  • editing experiences non-technical staff can use

Plugins are a maintenance commitment

Every plugin is code you did not write, running with full access, that must keep being updated by someone else forever. Forty plugins means forty ongoing dependencies and forty possible conflicts.

We use plugins where they genuinely save significant work, and write the small piece of code where a plugin would be forty times heavier than the need. The result is fewer moving parts and a site that survives updates.

Themes

Multipurpose themes ship with everything so they can sell to everyone. You use five percent and load the rest. They are also difficult to modify without fighting the theme's assumptions.

A custom theme built from your design is usually faster to work with, dramatically lighter, and easier to maintain, because it contains only what your site does.

Performance

Page caching, sensible image handling with modern formats, controlled script loading, and a database that has not accumulated ten years of orphaned rows. Most slow WordPress sites recover substantially from these four alone.

Security

Keep core and dependencies current, restrict administrative access, use strong authentication, disable file editing from the dashboard, and take backups you have actually restored. Unglamorous, and it prevents the overwhelming majority of compromises.

Editing that people use

Content editors should be able to build the pages they need without breaking the design. We configure blocks and patterns that match the design system, so a new page looks right by default rather than by discipline.

FAQ

Is WordPress right for us?

Often, for content-driven sites where staff publish regularly. For a small brochure site, something simpler may serve better.

Can you take over an existing site?

Yes, after a review. Some inherited sites need remediation first, and we say so before starting.

Should we use a page builder?

They speed up initial build and slow the site down permanently. We generally recommend against the heavy ones.
